There are four main criteria, effective aggression, clean punching, defense and ring control. Effective aggression and ring control can be hard to define, for aggression to be effective, it doesn't necessarily have to come from clean punching you could hurt your opponent from a shot half-blocked. Ring control is generally defined as how well you are executing your will on your opponent, and who is looking more comfortable tactically. Since scoring is defined by a mix of these four criteria, the result can be very subjective, although most of the time, the winner of a round is fairly obvious. The winner of a round gets 10pts, the loser 9, unless one fighter is seen to be particularly dominant usually if a knockdown occurs , in which case it is a 10—8 round.

Only professional fights are called fights. In order to distinguish between pro and amateur events, the amateur events are called bouts or matches. Before , refs were limited to simple hand signals. But because amateurs are learning in the ring, the new rules allow refs to say what the infractions are, and even to coach a little bit during the round. Most people still think that whoever lands the most punches automatically wins, or should win. Amateur bouts Hah!
